    It should.  In a recent meta-analysis of the literature on costs and savings associated with wellness programs, researchers from Harvard University found that medical costs fall by about $3.27 for every dollar spent on wellness programs and that absenteeism costs fall by about $2.73 for every dollar spent.

    However, the focus of the wellness program is what is important. If your company is focusing on campaigns to create better food choices or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, then no, studies show that they do not work very well in getting people to change their decision making in these areas but, they do decrease employee absenteeism.

    Let’s think about that for a moment. I’ve done numerous health talks over the years and I can tell you that one thing is certain…people know what healthy food choices look like.  It’s not a lack of knowledge anymore. I also haven’t seen anyone who would tell you that taking the stairs instead of the elevator is something they haven’t heard before.

    It could be rationalized that a company showing that they care enough about their employees to provide an environment where healthy choices are supported could make for a person feeling like they are a part of something greater than a punch the clock, 9-5.

    The feeling that we are being taken care of on a level above the norm, can give us satisfaction in many areas of our lives not just employment.  The feeling that our boss “cares” is something that got lost somewhere, a feeling that a well-designed Seattle wellness program can provide.
